Avantree has launched AuraPlex, a new Auracast assistive listening system that will make waves.

For many smaller venues, including places of worship, community halls, and studio theatres, the cost of installing an assistive listening solution can be prohibitive. Even the idea of getting quotes from companies can trigger a rash in even the most seasoned AV manager.

And this can lead to frustration and inertia. But AuraPlex offers an alternative and is also backwards compatible with Telecoil hearing aids thanks to its AuraPlex receiver unit.

Avantree has been working in assistive listening technology for the past 15 years, initially with Bluetooth transmitters and headphones for older adults watching television. Since then, it has expanded its range to include Auracast products that go beyond the home.

The company has been trialling its AuraPlex system for some time and reports regular inquiries from churches seeking to install it to help members of their congregations who are hard of hearing.

The problem Avantree’s AuraPlex solves

Traditionally, if a venue wanted to install an assistive listening solution, it required a Telecoil (loop). That could mean ripping up carpets or breaking walls to install a metal wire throughout the arena. Or, if you have modular seating that can be folded away or added to at will, the solution needs to snap together to extend the loop to cover all seats.

Such a setup takes time and can be costly.

Auracast solutions are neater, quicker and cheaper. The transmitters have been about the size of a WiFi router and plug directly into the AV desk: no wires, no hassles.

AuraPlex is similar solution that is perfect for those looking for a simple system that won’t break the bank.

It plugs into the AV desk and Auracasts the sound. This can be picked up by compatible devices, including Auracast-enabled hearing aids and headphones, and the AuraPlex receivers. A 3.5mm jack at the top enables wired headphones or a personal neckloop to be plugged in – it is neat, elegant, and affordable.

The Avantree AuraPlex transmitter

This is smaller than other systems and fits in the palm of your hand, making it a highly portable solution.

Powered by USB-C, it supports audio input via AUX or optical (TOSLINK) cables or Bluetooth. Like all Auracasts, it offers a long range of up to 100m, making it suitable for indoor venues such as churches, classrooms, lecture halls and village halls. Of course, the same caveat applies: this can vary according to the environment.

The AuraPlex can be daisy-chained to additional transmitters, but this will affect the latency.

Avantree warns that this is not suitable for outdoor use, stadiums, or arenas beyond that 100m range.

The company is planning a firmware update in the spring to enable simultaneous Auracast at 24kHz and 48kHz, ensuring compatibility with low-power devices such as hearing aids and audiophile-grade headphones.

The AuraClip receivers used in AuraPlex

These are about the size and weight of a small candy bar, lightweight and to attach to clothing securely to clothing.

They can be charged by USB-C or from a charging dock supplied by Avantree. The company says each device will last for around 16 hours on a full charge.

A single AuraClip allows the wearer to use their own wired headphones or a portable neckloop.
