The number of hearing aids sold in Europe last year surpassed 23 million: the highest on record.

Newly released data from The European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association show that worldwide sales increased by 2.1% compared to 2024.

EHIMA, which represents the world’s leading manufacturers of hearing instruments, says the growth “demonstrates sustained awareness of hearing loss and the benefits of modern hearing technology, as well as ongoing improvements in access to hearing care services worldwide”.

Its research shows that within Europe, 11% of residents have some form of hearing loss, but just over a third of them use hearing aids. EHIMA estimates that untreated hearing loss costs the EU €185 billion (£160 billion) a year, but if everyone did switch on hearing aids and hearing implants those costs would be reduced.

A line graph titled Global Hearing Aid Unit Sales Trend (2020-2025) mapping annual sales in millions of units. The horizontal x-axis marks the years from 2020 to 2025, and the vertical y-axis measures sales volumes from 12 million to 24 million. A single blue line connects six distinct data points, each labeled with its exact value. The line starts at a low point of 14.12 million in 2020, climbs sharply to 19.34 million in 2021, and then continues on a steady, gradual upward trajectory through 20.25 million in 2022, 21.81 million in 2023, and 22.69 million in 2024, before finishing at a peak of 23.16 million units in 2025. Sales of hearing aids have increased year-on-year since 2020. Covid-19 caused severe disruptions at the start of the decade, seeing market volumes dropping 17.2% over 2019 sales figures as global clinical access was restricted, falling to 14.12 million units.

Unsurprisingly, there was a massive 37% surge in the following as standard audiological services resumed, pushing totals to 19.34 million.

Since that stabilisation period, the industry has maintained a steady upward climb, expanding to 20.25 million units in 2022, 21.81 million in 2023, and 22.69 million in 2024.

Peter Karlströmer, President of EHIMA, says: “We are encouraged to see continued growth in hearing instrument adoption across global markets. The 2025 figures reflect increasing awareness of the importance of hearing health and the positive impact that professionally fitted hearing solutions can have on quality of life, social participation, and healthy ageing.”

As new hearing aid technology comes to the market, including Auracast and advanced noise management features, more people will make the switch and ensure sales stay strong.
